Our lithium assets

We produce and deliver sustainable lithium products globally

Our diverse and unparalleled lithium asset portfolio, consisting of both operating assets and development projects, provides us with a vast global reach, scale, and product flexibility. Today we have operating resources in Argentina and Australia and downstream conversion assets in the U.S., China, Japan, and the U.K. We also have multiple ongoing development projects in Argentina (greenfield and brownfield) and Canada (greenfield) to increase production capabilities and our ability to meet the needs of customers around the world. In the U.S., we operate the only integrated mine-to-metal production facility in the Western Hemisphere for high purity lithium metal, a core component of next generation battery technologies.

Salar Del Hombre Muerto

  • 100% Ownership
  • Lithium Carbonate / Lithium Chloride
  • Operating / Ongoing Expansion

The Salar del Hombre Muerto is the source of high-quality lithium brine. We have been producing at the site since 1997 and have expansion plans underway.

Salar del Hombre Muerto is located in northwest Argentina, in the northeastern portion of Catamarca Province on the border with Salta Province and about 1,300 kilometers northwest of Buenos Aires. Minera del Altiplano S.A. (MdA), Livent’s Argentine operating subsidiary, owns and operates the site and related facilities.

The resource has a very high-grade lithium brine with historical production >740 mg/L (605ppm) and very low variability. It is also very large, covering roughly 600 square kilometers (in its entirety) with depths potentially extending to 900+ meters below ground surface. Current production does not extend below 40m and inferred resource only reaches 200m, easily supporting additional expansion.

We use a proprietary form of Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) to concentrate the lithium brine, a technology that speeds up conversion and reduces land use, resulting in a leading sustainability profile. Concentrated salar brine is used as feedstock for downstream lithium production. As of 2023, Livent has 18,000 metric tons of lithium carbonate capacity on site, and 9,000 product metric tons of lithium chloride capacity at Güemes, an offsite plant located a short distance away in Salta Province. This high purity lithium chloride is used primarily as a feedstock for our Other Specialties business.

We are undergoing several phased expansions to increase lithium carbonate production capacity to 100,000 metric tons per year by around the end of the decade. The first expansion is expected to be complete in 2024, taking lithium carbonate capacity to roughly 40,000 metric tons.

Nemaska Lithium

  • 50% Ownership
  • Spodumene to Lithium Hydroxide
  • In Development

Nemaska Lithium is a fully integrated spodumene to lithium hydroxide development project in Québec that is strategically located to serve the growing lithium demands of North America and Europe.

We have a 50% equity interest in Nemaska Lithium, with the remaining 50% owned by Investissement Québec, an investment arm of the Québec government. We are providing operational support as well as technical and commercial expertise to Nemaska Lithium and have been appointed to engage in sales and marketing efforts on its behalf.

Nemaska Lithium comprises two integrated development projects: the Whabouchi mine and the Bécancour lithium hydroxide plant. Whabouchi is expected to produce 235,000 tons of spodumene concentrate that will serve as the feedstock for 32,000 metrics tons per year of lithium hydroxide capacity at Bécancour.

Commercial production of spodumene concentrate is expected to begin in 2025 and first production of lithium hydroxide is expected in 2026.

The project continues to be very attractive due to its scale, with an asset operating life of over 30 years based on current resource definition, its strong relative cost position, its strategic location to serve growing regional demand, and its favorable sustainability profile, including access to low carbon hydroelectric energy.

There is also additional land available at Bécancour to increase future lithium hydroxide production capacity, which could potentially be fed by James Bay.
