NBL is useful in the organic synthesis of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), and the synthesis of solution SBR and styrenic thermoplastic elastomers. It is also used for deprotonation and metal-halogen exchange reactions, and as an initiator of anionic polymerization of styrene and conjugated dienes.
